All pupils have statements of Special Educational Needs, with the large majority having additional difficulties, including ASD, ADHD, dyspraxia and Aspergers. The Academy exceeds its standard admission number of 70 by approximately one-third and provide alternative learning programmes for up to 500 additional pupils from 38 primary and 22 secondary providers. In addition to the teaching and care staff, a team of counsellors, specialist Occupational Therapy, Art therapy, Music therapy, mentors and Speech & Language Therapy ensure appropriate support for the most complex young person. It was awarded the TES Outstanding Special Needs School and TES Overall Outstanding School of the Year for 2012.

02
At Springfields we were initially commissioned to advise the Academy on their existing school estate which mainly consisted of temporary classrooms of varying condition. This led to carrying out a 30 year Masterplan for the whole school site. However the Academy had no funding. BAND Architects sought potential funding streams eventually leading to a successful application for £3m via the Academies Capital and Maintenance Fund. We assembled a design team and contractor on the basis of procuring the project via a national framework which avoided lengthy procurement periods and achieve Best Value for Money, in order for us to meet the funding programme criteria. We were subsequently appointed to provide all architectural services to completion.
03
The new facility comprises works to existing access roads including a new landscaped area allowing safe passage for vulnerable children across the site during classroom change in addition to a new 1504m2, two storey teaching block comprising 16 classrooms for KS2,3 & 4 with associated support accommodation. The facility took 9 months to construct on site with Kier and achieved its nett construction cost of £1180/m2.
