In Spring 2014 we were asked to reimagine an unusual single storey property nestled within a small copse in the village of Llwydcoed in Aberdare, South Wales. The project comprised the modernisation of circa 110 sqm of bungalow accommodation both internally and externally. The exterior works involved re-cladding with western red cedar, new roof and glazing. BAND Architects were later asked to provide landscape designs for the property along with a timber clad extension to the rear.

The client's aspiration was to achieve a modern, open-planned home with as much daylight as possible. The plan was essentially split into Public and Private areas either side of the main entrance, with the living room enlarged vertically into the roof space for top-lighting and horizontally into the kitchen and dining areas - all of which are gathered around a central fireplace in true Welsh fashion.
